Update: Hi Reader! I’m now publishing new essays, writing prompts, and updated lists of poetry publishing opportunities on my Substack, Effing the Ineffable. Subscribe for free!

Hello dear readers! Happy almost-winter. I’m back with another list of contests and open calls for poetry.

I want to say a bit about how I choose which opportunities to include.

Contests, especially, can be predatory if not operated fairly. I’ve heard it said that you should consider entry fees a donation; be prepared for rejection upon entering. If you’re still okay with paying, go for it!

Other notes:

  • I mostly do this for my own research, so most of the contests I include are U.S.-based.
  • I try to make sure all magazines I include adhere to the CLMP Contest Code of Ethics.
  • I like contests with low submission fees, that award more than one winner, that have a stated date for announcing results, that prioritize diverse voices, and that provide statements about their preferred aesthetics.
  • For open calls, I like themed issues and journals that pay.
